The Problem
“Colorism” refers to the “social marginalization and systemic oppression of people with darker skin tones and the privileging of people with lighter skin tones.” Colorism contributes to worse mental health, higher suspension rates, and fewer job opportunities for people with darker skin tones across races and ethnicities.
The Solution
Only about ¼ of young people have a strong understanding of what colorism is (source: DoSomething survey), and research shows that educating others on identifying and advocating against colorist language in the beauty industry, entertainment, social media, and personal conversations is the first crucial step to dismantling it.
Take and share a quiz to help others confront colorism.
