Ask Freddie: “How Do I Achieve My Goals This Year?”
We've got this.
Happy New Year, loves!
This year I rang in 2019 with great company, Ethiopian food, and my eyes set on a happy and healthy new year. Last week I was feeling a bit anxious about setting new year’s resolutions because it feels like I’ve never been successful with them in the past. I started questioning myself: What if I don’t set the right goals? What if I don’t know what I want? What if I can’t accomplish them?
This time I asked for your advice, and one anonymous DoSomething member shared a piece of advice that really stuck with me.
Continue to reach for your goals, even if you don't at first succeed. Oftentimes, we find it hard to overcome obstacles, but if we continue to go after what we want and succeed, the pay off seems more important and rewarding.
To whoever shared that, thank you! It’s important to remember to keep pushing forward on our goals and not give up when it feels like we’ve failed. In my own experiences, the times that have been the most challenging in my life have always been the moments of my most intense growth and have led to the most positive changes in me. In other words, don’t be afraid to fail, don’t be afraid to get uncomfortable, and most of all, don’t give up.
Easier said than done, right? If you’re looking to set goals this year, here’s my advice to you:
- Keep it simple. Find one thing that you feel passionate about and focus on that one thing.
- Be kind to yourself. It’s okay if you don’t hit all your goals.
- Pat yourself on the back. Don’t forget to celebrate what you accomplish and the other things you feel good about.
If you want more specifics on that, check out this guide, “7 Easy Ways to Turn Your Dreams Into Reality.” Whatever intentions you’re setting this year, don’t give up! Myself and the rest of the DoSomething community will be here rooting you on!

Go get ‘em,
