The One Big Thing

President Trump Walks Back Threat to Completely Shutdown the US-Mexico Border

Demanding that Mexico stop the influx of migrants into the United States, the Trump administration was prepared to take action this week. In light of news that the “mother of all caravans” is forming in Central America, the administration cut millions of dollars of aid to three Central American countries. The President then announced an impending shutdown of the US-Mexico border, but on Thursday backtracked stating that he would delay the shutdown for a year. In the pursuit of stopping illegal crossings, the decision -- if it's ever made -- could disrupt trade, legal immigration, and the lives of thousands of young people who cross the border every day to attend school, work a job, and more.

Reformation Launches Permanent Extended Sizing Collection

In a major win for inclusivity, sustainable brand Reformation has announced that they are launching a permanent extended sizing collection, starting with 18 of the brand’s most popular pieces and adding new items every month. "We agree it's unfair that we only offer clothing to a limited size range and have been working on changing this,” the brand said. “We're now happy to be launching a collection with more sizes (0-22). We're super sorry we didn't do it sooner." Right on.

The Good News Is...

Students Take Sexist Dress Codes to Court…And Win

In 2016, 14-year-old Keely Burks collected signatures on a petition protesting her school’s skirts-only dress code, which punished violators (aka girls who wore pants) with suspensions and even expulsion. After the petition was confiscated by school staff, she and two other female students with their parents took their case to the ACLU. This past week, a federal judge ruled in favor of the students, declaring the school’s dress code was unconstitutional. “We're happy the court agrees,” one of the parents told Buzzfeed News, “but it's disappointing that it took a court order to force the school to accept the simple fact that, in 2019, girls should have the choice to wear pants."
