You've Got a Friend in Me
9 easy and actionable activities for you to do with new friends this fall
Raise your hand if, over the past two years, you’ve felt a little lonely: ✋
Us too. Loneliness is a problem that affects many of us, and Covid-related social isolation has only amplified things. And while we know that social platforms like Instagram and TikTok can keep us entertained, we often engage with them solo–meaning that we’re missing out on camaraderie and friendship with our peers. In fact, we know that digital connectivity does not satisfy our brains the same way as in-person connections.
The reality is that loneliness is not good for our mental health. Research shows that things like meditation and gratitude can help combat loneliness, in addition to authentic and genuine connections. As we head back to school this fall, we’re all about making new connections, fostering friendships, and spending time with others. We’ve put together a list of our favorite activities to do with friends, old and new. Check them out and find the perfect way to connect with others and make long-lasting memories.
P.S. We’ve partnered with Monster High for our latest program New School Year, New Friends: You Belong Here, to help build positive relationships with your peers at school. Consider sharing a welcome note or guide to help others feel a sense of belonging at school this year. And who knows?! It may lead to a new friendship!
1. Have a picnic in the park
Invite your new friends from school and host a fall picnic. Pack your favorite snack, a blanket, and a frisbee or two, and visit your local park. Nothing is better than spending time outdoors, chatting with friends, and sharing some delicious fall treats (we’re partial to the Apple Cider Donuts from Trader Joe’s)!
2. Volunteer together
Another great way to spend time with friends, old and new? Volunteer together! Check out volunteer opportunities in your community–from walking dogs at the local animal shelter to packing food boxes for seniors–we promise there is something for everyone. And volunteering together gives you and your friends opportunities to bond over the causes you care most about. It’s a great way to give back and foster your connection.
3. Organize a study group
School is in session! And that means more tests, homework, and extra credit! Why not organize a study group with your friends? Find a central place for you all to meet–whether it be the local library or someone’s house–and study together. You can even make it fun with trivia games and flashcards! Study groups are also a great way to meet new people. Invite everyone in your class to the study group. It will be a great way to extend your social circle.

4. Join a club or sports team
One of the best ways to meet new friends with similar interests? Join an after-school club or sports team. If you’re feeling overwhelmed and not sure where to turn to meet new people, consider joining one of your school’s extracurricular groups. Maybe you’re interested in theater? Consider trying out for the upcoming school musical. Or perhaps you’ve always wanted to try football but have never played. No time like the present to tackle (pun intended!) those interests. We promise you’ll meet people with the same passions and interests as you.
5. Attend school social events
If you’re looking for a way to spend your Friday nights, consider attending your school’s social events. This is anything from a football game to a school dance. These events are great to attend with friends–or solo! If you’re attending solo, find someone new to sit with (or dance with) and introduce yourself. Getting out of your comfort zone is half the battle.
6. Plan a group halloween costume
We love fall because that means it’s spooky season! And spooky season means Halloween! Get the whole gang together for a group Halloween costume. Some of our favorite group costume ideas include Star Wars (Han Solo, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Darth Vader), Mario Kart (Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Toad), or even the characters from Stranger Things!
7. Visit a local museum or art gallery
Grab your friends and visit a local museum or art gallery. Many museums have discounted tickets for students, so be sure to check before you go. There are often rotating exhibits, so each time you visit may be different. You can even visit some museums, zoos, and art galleries virtually, including the Guggenheim, the Louvre, and the San Diego Zoo. A museum is a great place to make new memories with your friends–and learn something new! .
8. Host a game night
Invite your friends over for a game night, and we promise endless hours of entertainment. Encourage everyone to bring their favorite board game, or keep it simple with a classic party game like charades. And don’t be afraid to invite someone new. Game nights allow us to be silly, carefree, and show up as our most authentic selves!
9. Start a book club
Who doesn’t love a good book club? Amongst your friends, choose a book and allow everyone a week or two to read it. Then, meet up for snacks and discussion! Share your favorite characters and what plot twists you never saw coming. And the best part? If you pick a book everyone can borrow or rent from the library, this activity is completely free! Check out sites like BookClubs or GoodReads to get started.
So, what are you waiting for? Grab your friends and get out there! Friends don’t let friends do awesome activities alone.
