The (Actual) Birds & The Bees
How you and your kids can protect the planet (and the animals and people living on it).
Hi, parents! Welp, having The Birds & The Bees talk with your kids wasn’t so bad, huh? Now that you’ve had the talk, it’s time to do something about it. Here are some easy, impactful ways you and your kids can protect our planet (and, of course, the actual birds and bees) from climate change.
1. Register to vote!
It takes just 2 minutes, and electing officials dedicated to fighting climate change is hugely impactful.
2. Support grassroots orgs.
Think globally, act locally. Spend 10 minutes with your kids searching for local environmental orgs you can support right now.
3. Shorten your showers.
Save water by keeping your shower time to a minimum. Pro tip: Make a five-minute playlist. When the song stops, so should the water. (Maybe have your kid make the playlist for you, so you can finally see what all the Billie Eilish hype is all about.)
4. Unplug your home’s “energy vampires.”
When plugged in, electronics like phones, toasters, and other appliances use up energy, even when you’re not using them. Let’s slay these mothersuckers!
5. Commit to recycling (and composting)!
Clearly label the bins in your home to make sure the right stuff goes where. You can also reduce your waste by composting...and reduce your compost’s smell by keeping it in the freezer. (Find composting tips and search for drop-off spots near you!)
6. Walk, ride, or carpool to work.
Reduce your carbon footprint...while you increase your step count!
7. Eat less meat.
Producing and shipping meat is a major contributor to climate change in the US. Don’t want to cut out meat entirely? Try Meatless Mondays with the fam!
8. Buy local.
Shipping food around the world has big implications for the planet. Support sustainability (and your local economy) by shopping at local farmers’ markets or through a nearby community supported agriculture (CSA) program. (Still, good luck getting your kid to do the dishes.)
9. Just enjoy nature together.
Going on a bike ride, hike, or walk in the park with your kids is a perfect way to build more appreciation and love for our planet, and for each other.
Make a difference in your community and add your vision to the future of our democracy
