Pick Me Up
The Problem
Increased occasions for celebration and busy personal and school lives conspire to add to impaired driving during the Fall and early Winter months.
The Solution
With increasingly busy lives and ongoing stressful situations, people rely on their best friends for friendship, fun and support. Support can mean studying together for an exam or being a safe ride home, including being a designated driver.
Encouraging people to use their support networks for a safe way home, including using designated drivers has shown to be effective in aiding in safe driving.
People are music-oriented, and even those who don’t play musical instruments can appreciate the accessories that go along with being a rockstar (punch a hole in it so it can go on key rings or necklaces!).
How It Works
Give friends guitar picks (ukulele pick etc.) to high five all the supportive ways they are a friend, and start a conversation around impaired driving.
Do Something will include a DIY sheet of how to make the picks in addition to a compelling tips/facts sheet around what a “pick me up” means to a friend including:
- Tips and resources around securing them a safe ride home
- Tips for a passenger contacting a ride share service
- Tips for pedestrians, by sitting down before the night out to make a plan.
Encourage people to give these picks often - the more picks one person has indicates what a great friend they are.
