The DoSomething Members Making Recycling Look Easy

Hitting those recycling goals!

Let’s talk trash.

This generation knows just how important recycling is, but we did some digging and we fear some of us might be losing the plot. The U.S. generates more plastic waste than any country in the world, 91% of which isn’t recycled. In fact, the U.S. throws out enough plastic every 15.5 hours to fill the Dallas Cowboys stadium! The math wasn’t mathing, so we did something.

First our members tested their knowledge of recycling capability and infrastructure in their state. Then they put their newfound knowledge to the test through the 50 Bottles, 1 Goal challenge. Let’s hear from the DoSomething members doing their part to keep plastic out of our landfills.

“Having a healthy recycling system in my community is important because we are not aware of the unfavorable impact we commit to the planet until we start making a change.

Thank you, @DoSomething, for creating this challenge—it has truly transformed our perspective. The '50 Bottles, One Goal' campaign personally raised my awareness of the impact my community and I can make for our amazing Earth. <3

Many community members, neighbors and church members at 3 churches, have joined this effort, helping keep over 1,200 pounds of waste out of landfills. I got to tour my local recycling facility where I sold the materials collected and I am donating those proceeds to the Firefighters Burned Children's Fund.

“Having a healthy recycling system is important to me because it creates a clean neighborhood for everyone to enjoy. I hope that my actions will also help to keep wildlife safe, which is another passion of mine. I have been driven to recycle to support the environment as well as some of the animals like sea turtles which are at a high risk.

“Having a healthy recycling system in my community is important to me because it is necessary to protect our environment from waste and pollution. Non-recycled waste can lead to air pollution and water pollution, which has negative impacts on our health and the animals that we share the earth with.

“Having a healthy recycling system in my community is very important. I took my 210 bottles to a recycling center. It was like Toy Story the movie ! So organized, so clean, no smell!

It’s important that we let our community know that they can do their part and it’s not a burden, it's not dirty or smelly and you really see how much waste you create and the food choices you are making…
