More Than STEM: Stories That Spark Change

NY Hall of Science Explainers built personal narratives rooted in purpose and civic engagement.

On February 6, 2026, DoSomething partnered with the New York Hall of Science for an interactive session called “Why STEM?”, created specifically for the 70 NY Hall of Science Explainers in attenandce.

The focus? Helping NY Hall of Science Explainers and students connect their interest in STEM with civic engagement, and craft personal narratives that reflect both.

Using elements of Marshall Ganz’s Public Narrative framework, participants worked through guided exercises to shape their stories: what sparked their interest in STEM, what challenges shaped them, and how they want to use their skills to make change. By the end of the session, all students completed their worksheets and walked away with a working draft of their personal narrative.

Engagement was high throughout the two-hour experience. Around 15 participants actively joined Q&A and discussion, and two NY Hall of Science Explainers volunteered to share their stories with al their peers, setting a tone of courage and encouragement across the room.

At the end of the day, this wasn’t just a STEM workshop, it was a reminder that stories fuel action. When NY Hall of Science Explainers were given the space to reflect on their “why,” they showed up with depth, courage, and purpose. Their narratives made one thing clear: STEM isn’t just about what you know, it’s about how you use it to create change.
