The New Rules of Volunteering
DoSomething member Shiraz Aftab got his community involved in his volunteering efforts
Volunteering can not only be fun, it can be completely unique to you.
“The New Volunteers” is a way for the next generation of volunteers to service their communities in ways that are out of the box, special to them, or just new in general. That’s why we carefully review submissions from volunteers who have shown exceptional dedication and leadership. At DoSomething, we look for entries that stand out with thoughtful captions and impressive impact because we STAN seeing the positive changes you make.
Our Volunteer of the Month for November, Shiraz Aftab was inspired to help sick kids in his community by choosing his own service adventure to make a big difference!
What inspired you to begin volunteering? What were you seeing in your community that made you want to volunteer?
I became really emotional when I saw a billboard on the highway advertising that there is a huge number of kids getting treatment at Hurley Hospital in Flint, Michigan. The kids are there for various reasons, and some of them have to go through extremely harsh treatments and are struggling for their lives. I wanted to do something for them and bring a smile to their faces during such a difficult time and make their lives a little bit more enjoyable so they can persevere through their treatments. I was hopeful my community would support me in this cause open-heartedly. I saw in my community a need that made me want to volunteer for these kids going through rough medical treatments. I am amazed by the amount of attention and respect this project received. Everyone in the community and at my school donated with great generosity.
Did you initially know how you wanted to give back to your community? And if not, how did you search for ways to volunteer?
I was not sure in the beginning, but I told my parents I wanted to do something for kids who were being admitted to the hospital. They suggested different ideas. Then, I mentioned the "toy drive” idea to my school principal which he liked, and he approved it!
How did watching “The New Volunteers” encourage you while completing your volunteering action within your community? Is there anything that stood out to you while watching the series?
I got encouraged when watching Episode 2 - “Can high school students put an end to food waste?” I was impressed by the group of high school students who went from making 30 meals for those with food insecurities to between 4,000-5,000 meals just after 5 weeks. I figured that if they could do something this amazing, I could definitely help my own community!
What advice would you give to people your age about wanting to start their volunteering journey?
I would tell people my age to help in any way possible. Anyone can think of an idea, and that idea can blossom to have an enormous effect on your community. The effects will always be positive, no matter how small your efforts may seem. No matter how you help society, it will be for the better in the long run. Always stay focused on your goals!
You can become a Volunteer of the Month but first, we’re gonna need some receipts! Take action today and find a volunteer action that you want to service in your community, or make your own.
